Rose Marie Snell

Rose Marie Snell passed March 19, 2013, peacefully at home surrounded by family at the age of 89.

Rose Marie made the third move in her lifetime, leaving her “beautiful home” of 64 years in Santa Clara, California to join her large family, who moved here in 1971. Her arrival into her oldest son’s home completed five generations in Nevada County. She blessed us with her final year on this earth, hugging our babies; cooking, telling old stories and reading “spicy” romance novels. A first generation American-born Italian, she filled home with grace and love, leaving behind great memories of large family gatherings that included winemaking, Canning, cooking and baking. Family togetherness and acceptance of all was her creed. While watching the New Pope elected, she was asked what she thought of his outlook on GLBT relationships. She explained the secret of being Catholic was to pick and choose what one believed in and she was sure God would be giving the new Pope a talking to when it was his time to go home. She loved her family without exception. Each night ended with, “Thank you for my day. I love you; I am so lucky.”

She is survived by her sons, Robert Snell (Deby) of Grass Valley; William Snell of Nevada City and Richard Snell (Marlene) of San Jose, Calif., and the daughter of her heart, Wendy Hawkins, of Grass Valley; Her beloved sister, Billie Urbani of San Jose; her nephew; eight grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert; a grandson; two sisters and a niece. Her burial took place in Santa Clara, California, where she joined her husband in rest.
