Western Sierra Medical Clinic (WSMC) invites community members to register for a new session of Walk with Ease, a six-week program designed to help individuals go “from couch to walking” at a self-monitored pace.
Individuals will meet with trained instructors at Miners Family Health Center three times a week beginning Monday, April 22, with classes held Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 to 10 a.m.
Each class includes a brief educational talk on topics such as proper form and health benefits, followed by warm-up stretching, a self-paced walk and a cool down.
Participants will be supported to gradually increase their walk-time from 10 minutes to 30 minutes throughout the series. A program guidebook is available with customized walk-for-fitness routines, stretching exercises and heart-rate monitoring techniques.
“This program can help individuals regain some of their mobility while reaping the many health benefits of walking,” says instructor Danielle Yantis, a Registered Dietician at WSMC. “We begin very slow, yet build on this important tool for individuals embarking on a weight loss program or in reaching a health related goal.”
A previous participant states, “I feel like my level of fitness and health remains improved since taking Walk with Ease. My balance is better, I park further away from destination, and I am not as intimidated by exercise as I was before the class.”
