Nevada County taking part in 'One Billion Rising,' a day of action

On February 14 at The Center for the Arts and downtown Grass Valley the Nevada County Coalition of One Billion Rising will join with activists around the world for ‘One Billion Rising,’ the largest day of action in the history of V-Day, the global activist movement to end violence against women and girls.

One Billion Rising began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS. On February 14, V-Day’s 15th anniversary, women of Nevada County will join activists, writers, thinkers, celebrities, and women and men across the world as we express their outrage, demand change, strike, dance, and RISE in defiance of the injustices women suffer, demanding an end at last to violence against women.

“When we started V-Day 14 years ago, we had the outrageous idea that we could end violence against women,” said founder Eve Ensler. “Now, we are both stunned and thrilled to see that this global action is truly escalating and gaining force, with union workers, parliament members, celebrities, and women of all backgrounds coming forward to join the campaign. When we come together on February 14, 2013 to demand an end to violence against women and girls it will be a truly global voice that will rise up.”

The Nevada County Coalition of One Billion Rising will host a local celebration of a global movement on February 14. The free event will kick off with a Rise-Up Procession at 5:30 p.m. (meet up at downtown Grass Valley Safeway at 5:15 p.m.) and will move towards The Center for the Arts. Unifying the community in a global dance down the street, Jazzercise Grass Valley and Rhythms Fitness is teaching hundreds of women Debbie Allen’s choreographed dance Break the Chain.

“This is an incredible opportunity to empower women in our community and bring together the organizations and men who support them,” said Elisa Parker of See Jane Do, who is one of the half dozen organizers of this event. “The Nevada County Coalition of One Billion Rising is honored to be part of such an important event and movement and join forces with Ensler. It’s vital that we rise together to end violence against women and girls. The time is now.”

The V-Day celebration continues at The Center for The Arts including a ONE BILLION RISING Reception at 6 p.m., main stage performances including dance, music and spoken word at 7 p.m. and a dance party with DJ Moss from 8:30 to 10 p.m. food from Horn of the Bull Taqueria and In the Kitchen plus wine, beverages, snacks and sweets will be available for purchase.
