In his dictionary of 1755, which began to organize the English language, Samuel Johnson’s definition of philanthropy went as follows: “Love of mankind; good nature.” That still works for me. I am endlessly humbled and grateful at the way our community supports our hospital. People do give with love, and they give with such good will. It comes both in the form of financial donations and the devotion of folks who spend hundreds of hours every year volunteering on behalf of our patients.
