In his dictionary of 1755, which began to organize the English language, Samuel Johnson’s definition of philanthropy went as follows: “Love of mankind; good nature.” That still works for me. I am endlessly humbled and grateful at the way our community supports our hospital. People do give with love, and they give with such good will.
