Halloween festivities

Safe Trick or Treat

Beginning at 10 a.m. today, Mill Street in Grass Valley will be blocked off, allowing pre-school children to trick or treat at downtown businesses in this annual tradition organized by the Downtown Association.

There is a costume and window contest, which Tess’ Kitchen and their Batman theme won last year. The event is free to the public for all pre-school children and ends at noon.

Nevada City Trick or Treat

Similar to Grass Valley’s event earlier in the day, this Nevada City event has Broad Street blocked off downtown from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. for children of all ages. Trick or treaters are greeted by witches, warlocks, creepy sounds and smoking cauldrons. The Victorian architecture of the homes and the old deciduous trees of Nevada City are the perfect backdrop for Halloween.

Fall Family Festival

Twin Cities Church, located at 11726 Rough and Ready Highway in Grass Valley, hosts this event from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., featuring dinner, candy and even a hot-air balloon for short rides.

The event is free to everyone, but dinners are $5 apiece. A shuttle to the event will run from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. leaving from Lyman Gilmore and Scotten schools.
