Community meetings look to improve Internet service

Members of the community are invited to learn about joint efforts by the California Public Utilities Commission, Sierra Economic Development Corporation and the County of Nevada to help bring broadband service to densely populated rural communities. Be prepared to discuss options, interest and your willingness to participate.

The meeting is scheduled from 10 to 11 a.m. April 11 at the Nevada County Fairgrounds, Ponderosa Hall, Gate 2. This meeting is geared for residents and businesses in Nevada County.

The Gold Country Broadband Consortium (GCBC) is one of 14 regional consortia in the state funded by the California Advanced Services Fund Rural and Urban Regional Broadband Consortia grant program to leverage regional, state and national resources as an investment in improving and expanding broadband access.

The GCBC needs the assistance of all rural residents and businesses by performing an Internet speed test. To conduct the speed test, visit the GCBC Website and follow the directions:

The GCBC is also looking for neighborhood advocates to notify their neighbors of upcoming community meetings. Send an e-mail to if you would like to serve as a neighborhood advocate.

The Sierra Economic Development Corporation (SEDCorp) is the facilitator of a California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) grant to launch a public-private partnership aimed at increasing digital access and use in Nevada, Placer, El Dorado, Sierra and eastern Alpine counties.

Additional information and announcements will be posted on the Gold Country Broadband Consortium Blog: For more information on SEDCorp or the Gold Country Broadband Consortium, contact Randy Wagner at 530.823.4703, or at ttp://
