Join the Nevada County Historical Society at its speaker night presentation tonight to learn about the Mountain Maidu language. Mountain Maidu is one of the indigenous languages of the Sierra foothills, with only a few native speakers left. Efforts are currently underway to revitalize this language.
Stanford-educated linguist and author of “Mountain Maidu Grammar,” Karen Anderson will lead attendees through a traditional story in Mountain Maidu, highlighting the structure of the language and its narrative techniques. Learn to pronounce some of the sounds of Maidu and join Coyote on one of his adventures.
The presentation starts at 7 p.m. and is free. Come early for a good seat at the Madelyn Helling Library, 980 Helling Way, Nevada City. For more information, contact President Daniel Ketcham at 530-477-8056
