Everyone is invited to share their time and talents with Nevada County nonprofits, public agencies, and schools. Over 90 local agencies need your help. View more volunteer opportunities at Here is a sampling of what is available this week:

Handy persons needed — Are you experienced with minor home repairs and looking for ways to give back to the community? If so, FREED would like to have you volunteer for their Fix It Program! Volunteers address minor home modifications and maintenance needs from ramp construction to grab bar installation and minor plumbing or electrical repairs. For seniors and people with disabilities living in Nevada County, the need is great. Will you help Fix It?

Native plant education support — Do you like plants and want to support Native Plant education and conservation? The Redbud Chapter-California Native Plant Society is looking for a trustworthy, conscientious retired Certified Professional Accountant with 5-10 hours a month to spare to serve as their Board Treasurer.

Friendly visitor volunteers — As a volunteer with the Friendly Visitor Program you can make a profound and personal difference in the life of a senior or person with a disability. You need no special expertise; you will be asked to make a weekly visit of one or two hours; you will receive ongoing training and guidance. Consideration is given to matching you with a person of similar interests.

Is the kitchen where you shine? — Encourage teens healthy eating. Help teach pre-teen and teenage girls the importance of good nutrition by cooking 20-25 healthy snacks for the Friendship Club. Snack helpers are needed for Tuesdays, early afternoon. Come join the fun.

Be the friendly face of Nevada County — This is a wonderful opportunity to be of assistance to citizens and the general public visiting our government center. Nevada County is looking for volunteers to assist as Lobby Greeters at the Rood Center in Nevada City. As a volunteer greeter, you will be an ambassador to our county. Promptness, courteousness, and a sincere desire to promote local information are key.

Help promote a local treasure — Share your love of railroads and give informative talks as a docent for the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum in Nevada City. Training is provided. Assistance in the Gift Shop is also needed. Volunteers are needed once a week at 10 a.m. for 3-6 hours.

Let's book it — Sorting, pricing, and shelving help needed to prepare for Friends of the Nevada County Library monthly book sales. Get the inside scoop on the best books while you stretch and lift for a good cause. Morning volunteers for 3 hour shifts are in high demand.

Bring your facility management skills — Interfaith Food Ministry is expanding their services to the community. Can you help by volunteering as a facilities director? This job would include overseeing all aspects of the building and maintenance of their new location in Grass Valley. The director organizes and delegates duties such as landscaping, janitorial, and anything involving structure inside and out. Organization, leadership, and a general understanding of construction is necessary.

English Language Learners need your help — Help English Language Learners thrive in our community by volunteering as a one-to-one tutor with an adult English Language Learner (ELL). Special ongoing training is provided. It is not necessary to know another language or to have a teaching background. Sign up to take the two-day training workshop on Saturdays, March 15 and March 22.

Welcome baby — A new mother can face many challenges after giving birth to that adorable bundle. Be a Welcome Baby volunteer and help postpartum moms connect to community resources and share your knowledge about infant development, breastfeeding, etc. Good social skills a must. Training will be provided. Weekend availability preferred.

HelpLine senior information & assistance and telephone reassurance — ­Use your community knowledge and communication skills to connect people to health and social services by answering phones, socializing with seniors as part of the Telephone Reassurance Program or making appointments for AARP income tax, mature driver class, and HICAP (Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program). You will feel you are making a difference in someone's life. Volunteers are needed for Fridays 9 a.m.- 12:30 p.m.

For persons 55 and older, accident, liability, and excess auto insurance are provided and limited mileage reimbursement is available.
