Honoring Rachel Cory

The Palestine-Israel Working Group of Nevada County is resuming its Women and Men in Black Vigil from 5:15 to 6 p.m.Thursday on the Broad Street bridge in Nevada City.

The event is to commemorate the 11th anniversary of the death of Rachel Corrie, who was killed by an Israeli bulldozer as she was defending a Palestinian home in the Gaza Strip against demolition.

There will be signs to share, or bring your own.

Sunday is the anniversary of Rachel Corrie’s death. Human rights activist and freelance journalist Eva Bartlett, known as “the Canadian Rachel Corrie,” will give a program, “Standing With Gaza,” from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Nevada City United Methodist Church, 433 Broad St., Nevada City.

Bartlett has lived a cumulative three years since 2008 in the Gaza Strip, defending farmers and fishermen from alleged harassment and injury threatened by Israeli military forces.

During the Israeli assault in 2008-2009, she rode with Palestinian medics in their ambulances, documenting victims. During the attacks in 2012, she reported from a hospital in central Gaza.

Admission is free. Donations for the Maia Project that brings clean water to children in Gaza will be accepted.
