Grass Valley Chamber seeking July 4th parade entrants

With Independence Day less than a month away, the Greater Grass Valley Chamber of Commerce is encouraging groups, companies and individuals with an interest in being part of the colorful July 4th parade to submit their entry forms as soon as possible.

Entry forms can be obtained by contacting the chamber office at 530-273-4667 or by emailing a request to The entry fee is $25 and helps support the event.

The 2013 parade theme is "Strike Up the Band," which promises to attract some very creative and patriotic entries, said organizers.

The parade will honor Grand Marshal Lowell Robinson — longtime head of Robinson Enterprises. Robinson has been a major supporter of community events and nonprofit groups for decades.

The parade will form downtown and at 10 a.m. and wend its way to the fairgrounds. There, a full day of activities are planned, including musical entertainment and a fireworks display as darkness falls on the McCourtney Road grounds.

Hosting the Independence Day parade on odd-numbered years has been a tradition for Grass Valley since 1903. Prior to 1902, Grass Valley and Nevada City competed for the biggest July 4th parade, but when the streetcar line opened and the cities became connected in ways that had not previously been possible, leaders of the two communities came together and agreed to host the annual parade on alternate years.
