Nevada Union High School athletic director Steve Pilcher resigns
April 25, 2014
Long-time Nevada Union Athletic Director Steve Pilcher confirmed Tuesday that he will no longer be running NU athletics come June.
“I put in my resignation last month and will not be in that position after June,” Pilcher said. “I’ve been doing it for 13 years and that’s enough.”
Pilcher has been an educator at Nevada Union for 25 years and took over as athletic director in 2001.
“I’m proud to say I have worked with some of the finest coaches in the section and been part of some of the school’s greatest successes,” Pilcher said. “But, you do something for long enough, sometimes you need a change.”
The economics and government teacher said he looks forward to spending more time in the classroom and is excited to trade in the sometimes 15-hour work days for more quality time with his family.
“Teaching is my first love and I look forward to getting back to that, and having a more direct impact on the kids.” he said.
Pilcher went on to talk of the vast changes that have happened under his command.
“We weren’t doing emails when I started, and when I came in today, I had 200 of them.” Pilcher said with a chuckle. “We didn’t have a website or anything like that. Things are different now with social media.”
Since Pilcher took over as NU’s athletic director the Miners have won 10 section championships, but haven’t won one since the 2008-09 football season. Seven of those section championships were in girls volleyball, two were for football and one came from cross country. Under Pilcher, NU also sent several wrestlers and track and field competitors to the state competitions.
