Nevada County employee recognized for work on fire safety

Vic Ferrera, the program manager for the Office of Emergency Services, has also served on the board of directors for the Fire Safe Council of Nevada County since 2007 and is currently the chairman.

The mission of the Fire Safe Council is to provide Firewise education and programs to enhance emergency preparedness for catastrophic wildfire to all citizens in Nevada County, in order to reduce the loss of life, property and natural resources and to promote Firewise Communities.

As the chairman, Ferrera acts as the general manager of the council and controls the business and officers of the council. Being a member of the FSC gives him the opportunity to work with an organization that has a singular goal — to make Nevada County a community that has done everything possible to avoid a large wildfire, according to the weekly memo distributed by county Executive Officer Rick Haffey.

For Ferrera, a highlight of the experience has been working with an all volunteer board of directors and volunteers of all ages who represent the Fire Safe Council and travel through the community to educate property owners on proper defensible space.

Newtown Road project

Next week Nevada County is starting shoulder improvement work on Newtown Road.

The work will be located between Empress Road and Champion Road and will be under way for several months. The work will consist of shoulder grading and spot widening.

This is the first phase of improvements planned for Newtown Road. The second phase, which is planned for 2015, will widen the road to provide full four-foot shoulders between Champion Road and Highway 49.

During construction, there will be periodic traffic delays.

For additional information, call the Public Works Department at 530-265-1411.
