Nevada City firm awarded NID contract

Directors of the Nevada Irrigation District on Wednesday awarded a $1.7 million contract to C&D Contractors Inc., of Nevada City, for construction of a key connection between two NID treated water systems.

C&D’s quote was the lowest among five received by the district. The quotes ranged up to $2.2 million.

The NID project, called the Elizabeth George-Loma Rica Intertie Pump Station, is located near Grass Valley at the intersection of Brunswick and Idaho Maryland roads.

It will allow NID to supply the distribution system served by the Loma Rica Water Treatment Plant from the larger, more modern E. George plant.

Project engineer Doug Roderick said the intertie would provide important backup, be valuable in emergencies and allow the Loma Rica plant to remain off-line at times when water demand is low.

The project also allows NID to delay expansion of the Loma Rica plant, which has been estimated at more than $12 million.

The construction project is expected to begin later this year and take about five months to complete.

In other business, directors:

• heard a water supply update from General Manager Rem Scherzinger, who reported current water storage at 155,164 acre-feet. He said the district anticipates adequate carryover storage for next year, even if this winter brings only moderate levels of precipitation.

• approved a policy update of the NID District Financed Waterline Extension Program, which provides advance funding and support for groups of property owners seeking to connect to NID water supplies.

Water Operations Manager Chip Close said the update streamlines the program and makes it easier and more affordable for neighborhoods to obtain NID water service.

• canceled the regularly scheduled board meetings of Nov. 27, which falls on the day before Thanksgiving, and Dec. 25, which would be on Christmas Day.

The next regular meeting of the NID board of directors will be at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 11, at the NID Business Center in Grass Valley. NID board meetings are open to the public.
