After months of building the skeleton of the widened Dorsey Drive overpass of Highway 20/49, crews began this week to lay the concrete that will eventually carry vehicles over the thoroughfare.
“That is what this whole season has been about,” said Greg Zeiss, contractor HDR Construction’s project manager. “It is kind of the big finale of the season.”
Work began May 6 on the nearly $25 million project to add on- and off-ramps to Highway 20/49 at Dorsey Drive, with the addition of a lane on Dorsey Drive from Catherine Lane to Pampas Drive, realignment of Joerschke Drive, the erection of sound walls and improvements on Dorsey from East Main Street to Pampas Drive.
The project is expected to take two summer seasons to complete, wrapping up in September 2014.
“The project is, overall, on time and on budget,” Zeiss said.
Most of the retaining walls have been erected, Zeiss said, and most of November’s work will involve laying pavement on the overpass and working toward ceasing operations for the winter. Work is scheduled to pause in December and resume sometime in late April or early May, depending on the weather.
“The bulk of the concrete is in place for this year,” Zeiss said of the widened overpass.
“During the winter, the existing travel way that is in use will remain in use. Next year, drivers will be on the new section so we can tear up the old section people are driving on now.”
On Wednesday, Dorsey Drive, between East Main Street and Pampas Drive, will be subject to traffic control for paving. The Traffic Control System will utilize one-way control between 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., according to Grass Valley’s traffic control system.
On that same day, all Dorsey Drive intersections between East Main Street and Pampas Drive (Joerschke Drive, Catherine Lane and Spree Avenue) will be affected by the paving and are subject to traffic control and/or detours.
Grass Valley’s traffic control system advises motorists to use alternate routes whenever possible and observe all construction signs and the instructions of on-site personnel.
