NU student receives statewide award

Nevada Union High School student Lota Veimau has received the 2013 Every Student Succeeding Award from the Association of California School Administrators.

ACSA believes every student deserves equal opportunities to succeed.

The Every Student Succeeding program honors students who exceed all expectations, as well as the educators who supported them along the way.

ACSA is proud to highlight 20 students this year who stand out among millions.

These Every Student Succeeding Award recipients are extraordinary examples of perseverance, dedication, maturity and grace. Lota Veimau and the other award recipients will be honored on stage at general sessions Thursday and Friday at the ACSA Leadership Summit, Nov. 7-9, at the San Jose Convention Center

“We are proud to highlight these young men and women who have overcome great obstacles to succeed,” said ACSA Executive Director Wes Smith.

“Their stories are a testament to the great work being done in our schools every day. Their success is our success, and their achievements our inspiration.”

When Lota Veimau had to leave behind her friends and connections in the Bay Area to move to rural Nevada County, she found it hard to adjust. Her family is Tongan and experienced cultural anxiety in the predominantly white community. Lota was frustrated and frequently absent. She was not working up to her potential at Nevada Union High School, earning just a 1.5 GPA at the end of her freshman year, according to a statement from ACSA.

Fortunately, educators recognized Lota could be a shining star.

Through the school’s Partnership Academy, to which Lota was accepted, she began to thrive in an environment with smaller class sizes, access to technology and a career and college focus. By her junior year, Lota was earning a 3.3 GPA and working as a peer tutor. Today, she has her eyes set on becoming a teacher, according to ACSA.

Established in 1971, the Association of California School Administrators is the largest umbrella organization for education leaders in the nation, serving more than 14,900 statewide.

As a student-centered organization, ACSA is a leader in teaching and learning and strives to ensure all students have the resources and opportunities they need to excel.

“Their stories are a testament to the great work being done in our schools every day. Their success is our success, and their achievements our inspiration.”
