A Nevada City man allegedly left his two juvenile children at home alone with access to his drugs early Sunday morning to rummage through a van with the intent to steal items, according to the Nevada City Police Department.
Jacob Rice, 41, of Nevada City was reportedly caught by security staff of the Old Stonehouse Brewery, located at 107 Sacramento Street, after the owner of a Volkswagen Van parked there found Rice snooping through items on inside his vehicle at about 2:45 a.m., according to a NCPD report.
The van owner yelled for Stonehouse security, who detained Rice until NCPD officials arrived. Rice was subsequently arrested for attempted vehicle burglary, and booked into the Nevada County jail on a felony burglary charge.
Approximately two or three hours after Rice was booked in the jail, officers were requested to check the welfare of his children at his Nevada City home.
“Officers arrived on scene and discovered two young ... children home alone. Officers also discovered dried marijuana, marijuana shake, marijuana butter, marijuana smoking devices, along with prescription medication ...” reads Officer Scott Goin’s report on the matter. “Said items were all accessible to the juvenile children.”
Nevada County Child Protective Services responded to the residence and took custody of Rice’s children per law enforcement’s request and he was given an added charge of felony child endangerment.Rice was held in lieu of $50,000 bail as of press time Sunday, according to the Nevada County jail’s booking logs.
