Pine Creek time capsule contents released

The contents of the Pine Creek Shopping Center time capsule are available for pick up by organizations that made submissions.

The capsule was buried June 4, 1988, and unearthed June 22 with many of the contents fractured or waterlogged.

Event organizer Linda Fischer still is seeking to return the contents, however.

Fischer is the charter president of the Soroptimists International of the Sierra Foothills, which received a $1,000 prize for a time capsule contest 25 years ago.

A letter by Connolly Development, the shopping center developers, owners and managers dated June 4, 1988, was included in the capsule and addresses the people of Nevada County in 2013.

The letter states that the purpose of the contest was to “Preserve the Past for the Future” by demonstrating “life in Nevada County in the 1980s.”

In addition to the Soroptimist prize, the letter states sixth-grader Tait Lane received a $250 Pine Creek Center merchant gift pack for his entry, “Nevada County Trivia Game,” in the individual division.

Other submitted items included a VHS tape donated by the Nevada County Chamber of Commerce, a framed photograph taken at the center’s groundbreaking ceremony, and an advertisement printed in The Union to announce the opening of the shopping center.

According to the letter, the judges who participated in the contest included David Breninger, Grass Valley city administrator; Carl Wolff, president of the Retailer’s Credit Association of Grass Valley; and Don Schmitz, Nevada City Mint.

The remaining contest items include a diary by Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Nevada County, printed information by Nevada County Historical Society and Manzanita Parlor/Native Daughters of Golden West, miscellaneous items from Rough and Ready Chamber of Commerce and Nevada County Grange No. 51, a yearbook by Nevada City Yearbook Association, promotional items from Music in the Mountains, a journal/album from Cub Scout Pack 856/Den 5, news articles from Dave Carter and a letter by Loretta Friesen.

Fischer said she is happy to return any items, even if they are in pieces.

“I would give it to them in whatever condition it is in,” she said. “I just want to get things back to their rightful owners.”
