Man pleads no contest to multiple charges

A San Jose man arrested in November after members of the Nevada County Sheriff’s Narcotics Task Force allegedly found about 50 pounds of marijuana hanging in a garage and shed at his Jones Ridge Road residence has pleaded no contest to being a felon in possession of a firearm and a misdemeanor count of possessing a controlled substance.

A search warrant was obtained for the residence after a report of a physical fight at the residence. Sheriff’s deputies had responded to find blood and numerous weapons near the front entrance and forced entry, as well as a large amount of marijuana allegedly located at that time, and a report was forwarded to the task force.

Brandon Reynolds Carskadon, 33, was alone at the residence when deputies arrived.

A search of the residence allegedly uncovered about 30 pounds of marijuana cola drying in the garage and another 20 pounds drying in a detached shed. About 125 immature plants allegedly were found in a “make-shift” greenhouse of black plastic with artificial lighting, as well as 30 mature plants outside.

Approximately 15 Ecstasy pills and 50 Vicodin pills allegedly were found in a bedroom, and a .45-caliber handgun was found buried under a pile of trash in the kitchen. Deputies also allegedly found a lab for manufacturing honey oil.

Carskadon originally faced myriad charges besides the two to which he pleaded, including possessing a controlled substance while armed, possession of a controlled substance, manufacturing a controlled substance, possessing marijuana for sale and cultivating marijuana.

On Thursday, he took a plea agreement in return for a potential sentence of 16 to 24 months in state prison, said Nevada County Deputy District Attorney Jim Phillips.

Carskadon is set for sentencing June 17.
