Energy, stewardship are topics of study group

The future of America’s energy resources is the topic of the next Contemporary Issues Study Group, with a new five-week session starting in Grass Valley.

“America’s Energy Revolution: Can We Afford It?” is a free, five-week course Wednesday mornings that will explore local facets of this national concern.

Representatives from four local companies and utilities will discuss energy conservation in the face of growing consumer demand, the key challenges they face, and what they and consumers yet can do to better manage our resources.

Alternative approaches also will be discussed.

Underlying the discussion is a theological question: What is the responsibility of Christians to be good stewards of God’s creation?

Andy Navarette of Pacific Gas and Electric Co. kicked off the discussion earlier this week.

Sessions continue next week:

April 10: Waste Management Inc., with District Manager Steve Cameron, Contract Compliance Specialist Tisha Gill, and Public Relations Manager Justin Caporusso.

They will address the impact of recent changes the international corporation has made in how employees pick up and disburse the loads of garbage, recyclables and green waste collected in Nevada County.

— April 17: Nevada Irrigation District, with Assistant General Manager Tim Crough.

— April 24: Robinson Enterprises, with Don Hoffler.

— May 1: APPLE (Alliance for a Post-Petroleum Local Economy), with Joshua Lichterman.

Weekly sessions start at 9:15 a.m., last 90 minutes and include a question-and-answer period.

Coffee and baked goods will be served at 9 a.m. Sessions will be held in the Fellowship Hall of Peace Lutheran Church, 828 W. Main St., near downtown.
