Forest service, NID to speak to Nordic skiers club on the Sierra snow survey

Two speakers at Thursday’s meeting of Nordic Skiers of Nevada County will address the club about February’s Sierra snow survey.

Kevin McCombe of the U.S. Forest Service, who led the crew that conducted the Tahoe National Forest survey south of I-80, will speak first and describe how a traditional snow survey is conducted near Huysink Lake.

In addition to describing the skiing experience, McCombe will explain what tools are used and what they are measuring about the snow.

Sue Sindt of the Nevada Irrigation District will follow up with a discussion on other ways crews get to snow survey locations and how the collected information is used by local water districts and the Department of Water Resources.

McCombe is the Recreation Program Manager for the Tahoe National Forest. His main responsibilities include budgeting and administering the recreation program, which includes developed recreation facilities, such as campgrounds and picnic grounds, dispersed recreation, trails, off-highway vehicles, wilderness, wild and scenic rivers and winter sports.

Sindt is NID’s operations administrator responsible for coordinating water supply from reservoirs into canals and to water users throughout the water supply year while ensuring compliance with state and federal standards and regulations.

Part of her coordination includes measuring water in the reservoirs and predicting water supply through snow surveys.

McCombe has worked for the Forest Service for 23 years, serving at the Tonto, Gallatin, Lassen and presently the Tahoe National Forest. He has a degree in earth science from Metro State College in Denver.

Sindt has worked for NID for 24 years. She is a graduate of Humboldt State with a degree in forestry.

All interested persons are welcome to attend the Thursday meeting at Seaman’s Lodge in Pioneer Park, Nevada City.

A potluck begins at 6:15 p.m. with the program to follow. Bring a dish to share and your own table service.
