County hires new HR director

Nevada County announced Friday the hiring of Charles Wilson as its new human resources director, replacing the outgoing Gayle Satchwell.

“Wilson has extensive public and private sector experience in managing human resources functions and for the past three and a half years served as assistant director of human resources for the county of Butte,” said Nevada County Executive Officer Rick Haffey in his weekly memo.

“A member of numerous human resources organizations, Charlie’s knowledge of current issues facing public agencies will serve us well.”

The county has faced several issues with staff management, as it has trimmed its employee roster from 1,051 to 771 over the last decade and negotiated labor deals that ensure the county’s fiscal solvency.

Wilson held executive positions for the city of Roseville and the city of Grass Valley, where he functioned as the Human Resources manager, Haffey said.

Wilson possesses 17 years of experience in the private sector working as a HR professional, the memo states.

He is a graduate of California State University, Chico with a degree in public administration.

Wilson has four adult children, all attending universities or engaged in their own careers, and recently moved to Grass Valley with his wife, who is a computer software consultant, the memo states.

He is looking forward to working in the community where he lives, the memo states.

Ironically, Satchwell will be moving on to the city of Roseville, where her replacement once worked in an assistant role.

“Suffice it to say, (Gayle) brought the HR department out of the 1980s and into the 21st century,” Haffey said in January.
