CAWS, the Coaliton of Animal Welfare and Support, is sponsoring the Nevada County Animal Control Officer of the Year Award for 2012, which will be given at a banquet at 6 p.m. Jan. 18 at the Holbrooke Hotel.
“The purpose of the award is to recognize outstanding efforts by Animal Control officers and to encourage a high level of professionalism and care for animal welfare,” said Kathy Monteiro, CAWS director.
CAWS has formed partnerships with the District Attorney’s office to encourage the prosecution of animal abuse cases, and with Nevada County Animal Control to offer community assistance and support. One result of those partnerships has been a document authored by CAWS entitled, “Animal Abuse Investigation Checklist.”
With input from District Attorney Clifford Newell, it provides a comprehensive guideline for Animal Control officers to use when called out on abuse cases.
“It is imperative that the DA have all of the information and evidence they need in order to prosecute these cases effectively and this checklist facilitates that,” said Monteiro. “We have received calls from other Animal Control agencies that have heard about this checklist who would also like to implement it.”
Tickets for the banquet are $20 per person and can be purchased by calling 575-7984 or by contacting the CAWS website at CAWSnevadacounty.org
“We hope all of our members and others in the community who care about animals will attend the banquet to show their interest and support for animal welfare. Animal Control officers are our the official line of defense for those who are essentially defenseless,” Monteiro added
