Organization of the Grass Valley City Council is scheduled to shuffle at its meeting today, followed by an assessment of damage from recent storms.
With the election of former Grass Valley Downtown Association leader Howard Levine in November and re-election of Mayor Jan Arbuckle and Councilwoman Lisa Swarthout, the three members must be sworn in tonight. Part of that process necessitates formalizing the end to Councilwoman Yolanda Cookson’s term. Levine will fill Cookson’s vacated seat.
Also part of the process is selecting a new mayor to replace Arbuckle, whose leadership term has expired. Councilman Dan Miller, the vice mayor, is slated to ascend to mayor position with Councilman Jason Fouyer likely to take on the role of vice mayor, city officials said.
Arbuckle hosted her last “Monday with the Mayor” this week. She instituted the practice the second Monday of each month as a way to reach out to the community, said City Manager Dan Holler.
The bimonthly open-door meeting provided the community an informal setting to meet with the mayor.
“It was a great way to meet with people and have the time to listen to their concerns directly as individuals,” Arbuckle said. “Monday with the Mayor provided me the opportunity to meet with individuals and have discussions that would not happen in a formal public meeting and gave me an additional insight into some of the issues that face our residents.
“I hope the same or similar opportunity is continued into the future.”
Appropriate follow-up direction from “Monday with the Mayor” was provided to city staff who took advantage of the meetings, depending on items discussed, Holler noted.
After the new council is seated, its members will review an informal presentation of damage from a recent succession of storms that dumped more than a foot of water on Grass Valley and surrounding areas, causing flooding.
The new council is also slated to be presented with the annual State of the City, an address similar to the national State of the Union address by the president, only on a local scale.
Today’s meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Grass Valley City Hall, located at 125 East Main St.
