Current Nevada County volunteer opportunities

Behind the ideas and efforts toward building a better world, volunteers fuel a movement of compassion and connection. You can make a difference by volunteering right here in your community. By sharing your time and talents to help others, you can help bring a sense of hope to our hearts, homes, neighborhoods, and ultimately our nation.

Everyone is invited to share their time and talents with Nevada County non-profits, public agencies, and schools. For persons 55 and over, accident, liability, and excess auto insurance are provided and limited mileage reimbursement is available. If you are interested in any of the following positions, e-mail us at rsvp3@nccn.net, visit our office at 471 Sutton Way, Suite 202, in Grass Valley, or call weekdays 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at (530) 271-0255. RSVP is part of the Corporation for National and Community Service and sponsored locally by the Area 4 Agency on Aging. Find additional opportunities with RSVP at: www.volunteermatch.org.

Recording Secretary for Computer Learning Center

Monthly board meetings take place the third Tuesday of the month from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Basic word-processing skills are needed. This is a good opportunity with a minimal time commitment to help an all-volunteer organization with the goal of building a community of computer-literate adults in Nevada County.

Coming soon! The WoW ReShop

The Women of Worth thrift shop is opening Nov. 1. Can you help? Needs include: sorting, pricing/tagging and hanging clothes, straightening and stocking merchandise, cleaning merchandise, painting and repurposing merchandise, cashier displays (design/decorating experience a plus!). There are many departments in the WoW Reshop to choose from to help, including assisting with pick-ups and deliveries.

Board Position: Partners in English Language Learning

Hundreds of Nevada County residents who are not native speakers of English feel lost when asking for directions, reading product labels, filling out job applications, talking to their children’s teachers or making medical appointments. These hard-working, motivated families represent a growing number of adults living in our community, often invisible, who want to learn to improve or refine their English speaking and reading skills. The Partners in English Language Learning program is seeking board members to help sustain its dynamic program. Volunteers are needed with a variety of skills, particularly in business and financial management.

Be a ‘Happy Taxi’ Driver

Volunteer drivers are needed to help transport seniors and people with disabilities to doctor appointments, Sunday activities, etc., for Gold Country Telecare. Volunteers use their personal car and are reimbursed at $0.55 per mile. This is a much-needed service that truly helps our Nevada County neighbors. Time commitment is flexible.

Enjoy cooking, working with seniors? Your help is needed!

Helping Hands Caregiver Resource in Penn Valley needs someone to help during the lunch hour as a kitchen assistant/cook. This is a two- to three-month volunteer position. You would be helping to prepare meals for 15-30 people with the foods that are available Monday, Tuesday and Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Activity Assistants are also needed to help staff with games and activities, visit with participants, serve lunch, clean up and have fun! If you enjoy working with seniors and people with disabilities, please consider becoming a Helping Hands volunteer.

Have a Heart For Veterans?

Welcome Home Vets provides advocacy for veterans and their families and works to increase community awareness of the problem of military-related psychological trauma and its effects on the veteran, the family and the community. This dynamic nonprofit is looking for assistance in its new downtown Grass Valley office. Those experienced with Microsoft Office Suite are particularly desired. Board members are also needed, particularly those with a financial services background.

Feeding families, fueling hope

Volunteers with a variety of skills are needed to assist Interfaith Food Ministry in its mission to provide supplemental food to Nevada County families in need of assistance. A capital campaign is underway to help fund the purchase of a new distribution location to better accommodate the needs of the community. Event planning expertise is needed with particular help in the areas of marketing, art design, finance, entertainment, auctions and more. If you have a desire to help the hungry of our community and join a great group of volunteers, call for information.

Be a part of the ‘Holiday Cheer Team’

Holiday Cheer is an annual volunteer project with the goal of delivering gift packages to approximately 140 homebound seniors during the holidays. There are many opportunities to help, including assembling gift bags, baking cookies, delivering the gift bags and helping to obtain donations of items. We are looking for volunteer team members to form a committee to help lead the various tasks required to facilitate the project for the upcoming holiday season. If you have leadership and organizational skills, this could be a rewarding opportunity to help homebound seniors in our community.
