Friends of Hospice to collect pennies

Friends of Hospice members will set up tables in front of local markets Oct. 25 and 26 to collect “Pennies for Hospice.” The semi-annual fundraiser benefits Hospice of the Foothills. Ever wonder what happens to all of those “pennies” that are collected by Friend of Hospice four times a year? After collection, a “count day” is set. Several tables and chairs are set out at the Friends of Hospice office, and the mixed coins are set out in front of the many volunteers who sort the pennies in to piles. These pennies are put into bank bags, piled into red wagons and wheeled out to a vehicle in the Friends of Hospice parking lot for the chairman to drive to SPD Market, which has generously allowed Friends of Hospice to use the coin count machine to count the vast amount of pennies. This greatly relieves the original hand-count operation for Friends of Hospice. After the machine count, the pennies are driven directly to the bank for deposit. The rest of the coins and bills are still a manual operation. The five-, 10- and 25-cent coins are sorted and rolled by value. Rolls are counted, then noted on bank deposit slips.

The paper bills that we receive are stacked by denomination, counted and noted on deposit slips put into bags. It is wonderful to have volunteer members of Friends of Hospice who are dedicated to this operation.

Under the direction of Judy Nelson, chairman of the event, it is a work party that is worthwhile and also fun when several volunteers are working together. This is only one of the many events that are hosted by Friends of Hospice each year for the benefit of Hospice of the Foothills. Please consider joining Friends of Hospice to meet with the friendly volunteers who provide the work force of the fundraising activities.
