Anton Metz


Anton "Tony" Michael Metz died Dec. 31, 2007, at his home in Grass Valley. He was 85.

In accordance with his wishes, a private service and burial were held at St. Patrick Cemetery in Grass Valley.

Mr. Metz was born Oct. 8, 1922, in Meyronne, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Anton and Elizabeth Bolen Metz. His family immigrated to the U.S. when he was 15 months old. He lived in the Marysville/Yuba City area while attending grammar school and lived in the town of Washington before moving to Grass Valley. He graduated from Grass Valley High School in 1940 and married Eileen Sara Green on Jan. 7, 1945, in Sparks, Nev.

Mr. Metz worked for the Empire Mine, Matson Lumber and Helback Motors as a Ford mechanic before retiring in 1988 from Hockett Auto, where he had worked for 26 years. He became a U.S. citizen in 1969.

He was a member of the Nevada County Racing Association, a charter member and past chief of the Gold Flat Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the Nevada County Sportsman's Club, an avid bowler and member of the Fireman's Bowling League, past member of Mr. and Mrs. and a past Grass Valley Little League coach. He was an avid San Francisco 49ers football fan, a Giants baseball fan and a supporter of Nevada Union Football and American Legion Disabled Americans Veterans. He enjoyed caring for his wife and their home, yard and garden.

Mr. Metz is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law Fred and Melinda Metz of Grass Valley and Richard "Rick" and Becca Ray Metz of Cedar Ridge; daughter and son-in-law, Margaret "Sue" and Alan Rietter of Kenai, Alaska; daughter, Judy Imperial of Anchorage, Alaska; sisters Hilda Burns of Nevada City and Betty Lantzy of Washington state; brother, Leonard Metz of Auburn; grandsons Bradley Metz of Grass Valley, Marcus Metz of Nevada City and Jacob Metz of Chico; granddaughters Antonia Rietter of Anchorage, Alaska, and Jillian Metz of Cedar Ridge; and great-grandson, Maurice Anton Metz of Grass Valley.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Eileen Metz; and son-in-law, Thomas Imperial.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary in Nevada City.
