PiELL (Partners in English Language Learning) has been training volunteer tutors to teach English to adult language learners in Nevada County for more than 25 years. The tutors and students frequently form long-lasting friendships during their one-on-one tutoring sessions, according to PiELL.
One of the tutors, Kathryn Eldredge, has been working with her student, Martha, for about one and a half years.
Martha’s two small children keep her busy, but she had been feeling isolated in her apartment while her husband was at work, simply because she did not have her driver’s license. With that goal in mind, Eldredge helped Martha study the specific vocabulary that she would need in order to pass the written test, and her husband acted as her driving instructor.
Now that she has passed the test, she drives her husband to work, does her shopping and feels more independent. Being out in the community gives Martha many more opportunities to practice English while interacting with others, according to PiELL.
PiELL offers a two-day New Tutor Training session twice a year. The next New Tutor Training session will be Sept. 20 and 27.
Trainees must attend both days. After training, new tutors are matched with adult students. Most tutors spend one to two hours per week with their students, meeting wherever is convenient for both of them.
