Filing deadline passes for Grass Valley City Council

The filing deadline for Grass Valley City Council candidates passed at 5 p.m., Wednesday. According to city staff, all four candidates returned their filing packets on time, complete with 20 valid signatures, verified by the county elections department.

Jerri Glover, one of the first candidates to pull papers, was the last to file. Glover presented her packet to city hall Wednesday morning.

Under different circumstances, the deadline would have passed last Friday — but by law the city had to extend it by five days because Mayor Dan Miller, an incumbent, did not run for re-election. Instead, he will be moving on to the Board of Supervisors representing District 3.

Glover, Jim Firth, Terry Lamphier and incumbent city councilman Jason Fouyer will all appear on the ballot. Glover is an entrepreneur with a legal and administrative background. Firth is chair of the Nevada County Democrats. Lamphier is an outgoing District 3 supervisor, and former Grass Valley planning commissioner. Fouyer manages an engineering firm and local laboratory.

Firth and Fouyer have both submitted letters to The Union in the last week, detailing their intentions for the upcoming campaign.

Firth, who started his bid for office by calling out the city’s “good old boys,” called on his fellow candidates to run a clean campaign in the coming months.

The recent District 3 race between Lamphier and Miller drew criticism after Miller’s campaign ran an unflattering advertisement about Lamphier.

There are two open council seats this year for a total of four candidates. The job involves at least two meetings per month, and comes with a monthly stipend of $275 — unlike the Nevada City Council, which is all-volunteer.

Voters now have roughly 81 days to choose a candidate before the 2014 General Election on Nov. 4.
