Two separate vehicle accidents sent multiple victims to area hospitals Thursday afternoon.
A solo motorcycle accident injured a Penn Valley man, sending him to Sutter Roseville Medical Center via helicopter.
Kevin Playle, 36, was riding a motorcycle at Highway 49 and Pleasant Valley Road at the time of the accident at 5:45 p.m., according to dispatch reports.
Playle was suspected of driving under the influence and sustained severe head trauma, according to the California Highway Patrol.
He was listed in critical condition as of Friday night.
Five people were injured in two related accidents at about 4:45 p.m., on Highway 49 at Cramer Road.
Kayla Jones, 26, of Carmichael, was driving an Infiniti southbound on Highway 49 at a high rate of speed when she lost control of her vehicle and crossed into oncoming traffic, hitting a Grand Am driven by Neil White, a CHP officer said.
Jones was flown via helicopter to Mercy San Juan hospital, where she was reported in good condition.
Her three passengers, who were not identified, were taken to Sutter Roseville Medical Center via ambulance.
White reportedly sustained major injuries and also was taken by ambulance to Roseville. He was listed in serious condition Friday night.
Three other vehicles collided while trying to avoid the first wreck, according to the CHP — a RAV-4, a Dodge Ram pickup pulling a travel trailer, and a Subaru Forester. No injuries were reported from that secondary accident.
The accidents caused a major traffic tie-up, with one lanes closed for hours.
