Region suffered multiple serious bike accidents Thursday

An unidentified bicyclist reportedly sustained major injuries after crashing her bike on Lower Colfax Road at approximately 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning.

She was riding with a group known as Sierra Express Bike Club at the time of the accident.

“It was pretty shocking,” said Jerry Thomas, a Nevada City resident. “It was kind of out of the blue, nobody expected it.”

Thomas said he’d ridden ahead of the rest of the group, and was waiting for them farther down the hill when the crash occurred. He did not witness it, however.

“The highway patrol responded, and they helicoptered her to Roseville with multiple injuries,” Thomas said. “As far as I know, a cracked helmet, a broken skull, broken collarbone, a cracked vertebrae, broken wrist, and facial contusions.”

Other witnesses said that first responders arrived on scene very quickly.

Due to the July 4 holiday, official sources were not available to confirm or comment. Calls to the California Highway Patrol were not returned by press time.

In Placer County, another bicycle accident claimed the life of Dutch Flat resident Barbara Lane Crowell. According to the Auburn Journal, Crowell was struck by a pickup truck at roughly 6:40 a.m. Thursday morning on Foresthill Road.

The driver was reportedly arrested for driving under the influence.
