Celebrate Mother's Day at Empire Mine SHP

Celebrate Mother’s Day, and enjoy Empire Mine’s fragrant, springtime beauty. The rose gardens will be blooming with color, and the fountains will add to the splendor.

Docents portraying Mr. and Mrs. William Bourn Jr. will extend an extra-warm welcome to visiting mothers, grandmothers and their families. Many other colorful, historical characters will be portrayed, as well, as part of the mine’s Living History Program. Grandmothers will enjoy free admission, and all mothers will receive a complimentary gift.

“It’s a family day and a special way to honor the women in our lives who have given us so much,” said State Park Ranger Greg Sherr. “To show our appreciation, we’re giving away a special little gift, handcrafted by our ‘smithies’ in the blacksmith shop here at the mine. They’ll explain its historic and romantic significance. Children are also welcome to pot a plant as an extra gift for mom.”

Tasty food, beverages and ice cream will be available for purchase. Choose from traditional Cornish pasties served by park volunteers, Sweeny’s Weenies, Coffee Run and Lazy Dog Ice Cream.

“In Empire Mine’s heyday, when it ranked as one of North America’s oldest, largest and most prosperous hard-rock gold mines, women were seldom seen near the mine,” Sherr added.

“Today, we welcome women from all over the world. Our Mother’s Day Springtime Event is a lovely way to celebrate our local history and our mothers — and everyone’s invited.”
