Storm causes power outages, traffic accidents

Monday night’s snowstorm, which persisted into Tuesday, resulted in power outages for thousands of residents in Grass Valley, Nevada City and Alta Sierra. At least one downed power line was reported.

Pacific Gas and Electric reported a power outage affecting 843 customers on Banner Lava Cap Road, from Gracie Road to Red Dog Road, at 9:44 a.m.

A spate of smaller outages, including one affecting at least 22 customers, was reported along Red Dog Road at about 11 a.m.

By 3:30 p.m., however, PG&E’s outage map indicated that service had been restored for all customers in Western Nevada County.

Early Tuesday morning, Sierra College canceled classes, but it was the only school in the area to do so.

Numerous car accidents were reported throughout Nevada County, but it’s difficult to determine how many of those were due to inclement weather.

Chains were required on parts of Interstate 80, and on Highway 49 east of Nevada City — but as of deadline Tuesday night, that was no longer the case.
