Zoning changes in front of Nevada County Board of Supervisors

Matthew Renda
Staff Writer

The Nevada County Board of Supervisors will hear a series of proposed zoning amendments during its regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday.

At 2 p.m., the board will consider rezoning a 210-acre parcel located off of Old Blue Road just north of Highway 20 to provide tax breaks to a timber harvesting operation in exchange for sustainable forest management.

The planning department recommends changing the zoning designation at the property from Forest-160 to Timber Production Zone.

The zoning ordinance TPZ was created in 1976 by the California state Legislature and provides incentives to property owners in exchange for meeting standards relating to prudent forest management.

The property has been harvested for timber since 1936 and has already been approved for nonindustrial timber harvest by the California Department of Fire and Forestry.

The county will further seek to rezone about 40 acres of property known as the Bear River Mills site currently designated as Business Park.

Planning staff recommends the property be rezoned to Public to pave the way for the county's long-harbored plans to install a corporation yard at the site. A corporation yard is used by public entities to store various pieces of equipment, most of which are related to transportation, such as maintenance vehicles, snow plowers, pavers, etc.

Finally, staff is recommending a quarter-acre parcel in Rough and Ready be rezoned from Public to Agricultural.

The small land plot once hosted the Rough and Ready Fire Department station, but the fire department has since relocated its headquarters to the town center.

As a result, the staff recommends switching the small parcel to a zoning designation that is consistent with the surrounding land use.
