Youth coach arrested on sex charges
December 3, 2004
Authorities are building a federal case against a Rocklin coach who allegedly molested a Nevada County teen basketball player for the past four years.
Sheriff Keith Royal said late Friday that Frankie Kilgore, a 35-year-old coach for an Amateur Athletic Union team, was arrested Wednesday outside his place of employment, “for continuous sexual abuse of a child.”
The amateur basketball team is unaffiliated with any school and competes nationally against other junior teams.
Royal said the arrest came after Kilgore allegedly implicated himself in a face-to-face meeting with the girl, during which she was wearing a recording device.
Nevada County Deputy District Attorney Kathryn Kull said she is working on the case with the U.S. District Attorney’s office because the alleged crimes occurred in various states around the country where the team was playing in tournaments. Typically, federal convictions carry longer jail terms than state cases.
Kull said other charges could be filed in Placer County.
Royal said California Department of Justice special agents and Rocklin Police were brought into the investigation, which started around Thanksgiving. The victim told a friend about the alleged molestations, and the friend convinced her to tell her parents, Royal said.
The parents then hired a lawyer, who approached the Sheriff’s Office. It was determined that none of the alleged sex acts had occurred in Nevada County, Royal said, but they may have taken place in other parts of California and in Oregon, Florida, Connecticut and other states.
Royal’s office then contacted the other law enforcement agencies, who all decided to act quickly to prevent any other crimes.
Kull said the girl called the coach Wednesday and tried to get an admission over the phone but could not. However, Kilgore did agree to meet her in Rocklin, where she recorded alleged admissions of prior sex acts with her.
“She’s a courageous girl,” Kull said.
He was arrested that same day shortly after the meeting, Royal said.
Kilgore was booked into the Placer County Jail on various charges of having sex with a minor. Jail officials said he was released on bail.
