Week Ahead: Celebration of Life Triathlon returns to Cascade Shores

The Union staff

The 19th annual event Barbara Schmidt Millar Celebration of Life Triathlon is slated for Sept. 15 at Cascade Shores on Scotts Flat Lake.

The event raises money to benefit the Barbara Schmidt Millar Memorial Fund of Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation, which provides free and subsidized mammograms for women who would normally avoid the procedure due to cost. In addition, Schmidt Millar's family awards annual Healthcare Educational Scholarships from triathlon proceeds to graduating young women from Nevada Union High School.

The triathlon annually draws more than 400 participants, many who are cancer survivors or participate to honor a loved one stricken by cancer.

Nevada City officials to discuss police chief, city manager positions

Nevada City's City Council members are slated to meet in a closed session Wednesday to consider the appointment and employment of a police chief and city manager, according to an agenda for the Sept. 10 meeting of the council.

Earlier this year, City Manager David Brennan and Police Chief Jim Wickham announced their impending departures.

Brennan, whose contract with Nevada City ends at the end of December, has served as the town's municipal leader in a part-time capacity since June 2011. Brennan came to Nevada City as a California Public Employees' Retirement System annuitant, supplementing his $48,000 city salary with his pension. Similarly, Wickham, another CalPERS annuitant, served as a part-time police chief.

On top of a CalPERS crackdown on this practice, which has prompted the city to initiate the replacement of Wickham more than a year earlier than initially planned, Brennan has repeatedly said that staffing key department head positions with part-timers was only a short-term solution.

Council members, who are scheduled for a Strategic Planning Retreat on Tuesday, will discuss the positions in closed session following the end of Brennan's City Manager Report, the final item on the agenda for Wednesday's public meeting, planned for a 6:30 p.m. start.
