Vegetation fire breaks out in Nevada County

A 3-acre vegetation fire off Lost Lake Road east of Grass Valley was contained Monday afternoon, according to fire officials.

While officials suspect a brush fire got out of control, the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Regional fire agencies, including Nevada County Consolidated Fire District, Ophir Hill Fire District, Peardale Chicago Park Fire Protection District and Cal Fire all responded to the blaze.

The remote location of the fire, compounded by access difficulties, compounded the fire fight, said a Cal Fire official at the Grass Valley Interagency Command Center.

Six engines, two water tenders, two crews and a bulldozer responded.

Cal Fire acknowledged the fire was rather large given the time of year.

Tom Dang of the National Weather Service said the lack of precipitation in the 2013 calendar year is approaching record-breaking levels. The paucity of rainfall has extended the fire season into atypical time frames.
