Two Penn Valley schools to discuss further alignment

Ready Springs and Pleasant Valley schools, which already share management, business offices and special education, will hold a series of meetings to discuss further aligning their resources, including the prospect of fully consolidating.
The first of these joint meetings will begin at 6 p.m. Nov. 1 in the Ready Springs School Library.
The purpose of this first meeting is to share with the two districts and the community what is happening at the schools; their current model of shared management, their educational and financial needs and how they can further better assist each other.
Over the past decade, the two districts have shared the cost of management, business office and special education staff as well as several programs and services in an effort to reduce costs and be as efficient as possible.
However, the schools still hold much autonomy with each district having its own board of trustees.
In some cases, this shared model has necessitated a duplication of efforts from the administrative staff, which must generate two reports, two financial statements and other formal procedural requirements, district administrators have told The Union.

Due to unprecedented decreases in state and federal funding and declining enrollment, both boards agree that they still need to operate more efficiently and align resources and priorities as much as possible to preserve long-term fiscal health and educational opportunities.
"I appreciate the additional time and thought the trustees are committing to look into ways to increase future collaboration and to explore options about consolidation," said Debra Sandoval, superintendent for both districts.
"It's also extremely important for the public to be involved in these conversations. This is our opportunity to ensure the best possible educational future for all of the children of Penn Valley."
Over the next few months, the boards will analyze demographic studies, configurations of similar-sized districts and the educational and financial impact of expanded collaboration and possible consolidation of the two districts.
These meetings will alternate between the districts and the public is encouraged to attend to learn more and provide comment.
