This weekend, The Union will host its 29th annual Home and Garden Show at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. The event will feature nearly 200 vendor booths, nine demonstrations and live music.

Then Again will play Saturday from 11 a.m. til 2 p.m. On Sunday, Dream and the Dreamer will perform from noon until 3 p.m.

A series of nine demonstrations also kick off Saturday at 11 a.m. in a one-hour session with Emil Baldoni, master nursery professional and co-owner of Grass Valley's Weiss Brothers Master Nursery. Baldoni will focus on container gardening and plants that perform well in containers.

Attendees who are interested in producing their own food will get the chance to learn about edible landscaping, beekeeping and raising chickens. The schedule also includes a demonstration on canning food for beginners and how to transplant seedlings for a home vegetable garden.

In addition to workshops and demonstrations for the general public, the Home and Garden Show is also a good opportunity for local merchants to spend quality face time with prospective customers.

"Last year was very effective," said Peter Kraft of Kraft Kitchens in Nevada City. "I've had a very busy year."

Kraft designs and builds kitchens and bathrooms, using high-quality, handmade wood products. Lately, Kraft says, the most popular options have been alder, cherry, maple, and a new sustainable hardwood called lyptus.

Kraft Kitchens also installs quartz and granite countertops.

Home renovations and construction took a big hit during the recession, but things have improved in the last few years. That's good, since Kraft's daughter is a graduating senior at Nevada Union High School.

"There was almost no work for a long period of time, but it's gotten better," Kraft said. "It's great timing. I've got to put my daughter through college."

Peter Kraft and Kraft Kitchens can be found at booth 14, at the north end of the fairgrounds main building.

The 29th Annual Home and Garden Show takes place April 26 and 27 at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. It's open to the public — and admission is free. Carpooling is advised, however, as a $5 parking fee will be collected by the fairgrounds.
