Know and go:
What: The 2nd California Cavalry
When: 11 a.m., Saturday
Where: The Nevada County Horsemen’s facility at Brunswick Road and Town Talk Road
The 2nd California Cavalry's Sacramento Rangers are coming at 11 a.m. Saturday to the Nevada County Horsemen's facility in Grass Valley, A Civil-War era band will be performing, and there are also plans for a barbecue. The event is free to the public, and organizers with the Nevada County Horsemen say their goal is to promote horsemanship in the community.
"One of their things in re-enactment is that when you take pictures of them, they don't smile," said Charles Green, president of the Nevada County Horsemen.
That's because back in the era cavalrymen will be reenacting, cameras were relatively new. Smiling for pictures was not yet customary.
The Nevada County Horsemen got started around 1950, built upon the foundation of the Nevada County Sheriff's posse.
They meet on the second Tuesday of every month. This year they're also doing team-roping sessions on Thursdays. Their facility off of Brunswick Road is also available for rent.
