A sprinkling of hail and snow hit the Grass Valley area Wednesday, but the worst of the cold front is over, according to the National Weather Service in Sacramento.

“Thursday might have a few isolated showers around with a high of 46,” said Johnnie Powell, forecaster for the weather service, adding sun and warmer temperatures are expected for the weekend, Powell said.

“The weekend looks fabulous, with highs in the mid-60s,” Powell said.

The snow levels were at about 4,000 feet, Powell said, with about two feet of new snow reported by Squaw Valley USA.

“There is about a foot of snow around the 5,000-foot level and above,” Powell said.

The cold front involved a low-pressure system that came through Tuesday night and left the cold air behind, which caused the showers, Powell said.

“That’s why the worst is during (mid-day),” Powell said. “The cold air mixes with the warm air heated up by the sun, which makes these showers.”
