Quilt guild spreads the love

Submitted to The Union

The adage that "one who sleeps under a quilt is surrounded by love" is one in which the 200 members of the Pine Tree Quilt Guild of Nevada County firmly believe.

Not only do they believe in it, they also put those words into action. This year, the guild celebrates 30 years of service to the community, which includes the donation of quilts, walker bags, pillowcases and Christmas stockings to local residents in need.

Each year, members of the guild present more than 700 of these items to various local nonprofit organizations that serve the homeless, foster youth, families in crisis, children's services, fire victims and senior living residents.

As additional special projects, members are currently working hard to complete graduation quilts for local foster teens, as well as numerous baby quilts for hospitalized Nicaraguan infants. In addition to community service quilts, the guild assists classroom instruction in local schools, using quiltmaking as a foundation for math and history lessons. As part of its educational outreach, the guild provides two $1,500 scholarships to deserving and talented students of the textile arts and related art media.

Guild members are a highly diverse group with a wide range of ages, religions, and occupational backgrounds. All are united by their love of the quilt-making arts, ranging from the very traditional to newly evolving multi-media textile art techniques.

Proceeds from the Guild's annual "Springtime In The Pines" Quilt Show help support the group's many community service projects. This year the show will take place May 3-4 at the Nevada County Fairgrounds and will include three buildings of beautiful quilts on display.
