Possibility of snow showers next week
December 2, 2013
Near-record warm weather will give way to a more seasonal chill early this week with a slight chance of snow showers Tuesday night and Thursday.
The warm and dry weather will continue through the weekend, but a cold low-pressure system early next week might spread light snow across the mountains and possibly down to the foothills, according to National Weather Service forecaster Tom Dang. Freezing conditions will be possible for the middle of next week.
Mainly clear skies are being observed across Northern California, although a batch of elevated moisture is approaching from the northwest, Dang said in a forecast discussion Friday.
"As of this writing, temperatures are once again near record territory in Sacramento," Dang said. "Warm afternoon highs will continue through the weekend as high pressure centered over the east-central Pacific nudges into NorCal. Highs this weekend will be similar to today, which is roughly 7 to 15 degrees warmer than normal."
The weather system coming into the area means much colder temperatures late Tuesday through Thursday. The snow levels may drop down to 3,000 feet, but limited moisture should keep snow amounts fairly low.
Today, the highs are forecasted to be near 64 degrees in Grass Valley with a low around 40 degrees tonight. Sunday is expected to be sunny with a high near 67 degrees.
The thermometer will start to drop Monday, forecasted to be mostly sunny with a high near 63 degrees and a chance of showers and a low of 37 degrees Monday night.
There is a chance for more rain Tuesday with the high forecasted to be near 48 degrees. There is a slight chance of rain and snow showers Tuesday night with a low around 29.
Wednesday is expected to be mostly sunny with a high near 45, and there is a slight chance of snow showers Thursday with similar temperatures on tap.
This calendar year is shaping up to be one of the driest on record, forecasters have said.
