Pine Street bridge to close for maintenance

Drivers planning to take the Pine Street bridge to downtown Nevada City or to Seven Hill Business District will need to find
another route, as the bridge will be closed today and again Oct. 9, according to city workers.

The 16-year-old bridge will be closed for basic maintenance, such as cleaning, application of epoxy sealer and laying concrete, said Verne Taylor, the city's public works director.

DMCE Concrete and Engineering Contractors is doing the concrete work for $19,950, Taylor said.

Funding for the work comes from Measure S.

The bridge will be closed during daytime hours for both days of work, but will be open at night, Taylor said.

Built in 1996, the bridge spanning Deer Creek is not the first. The original bridge, on Bridge Street, was constructed in 1862 but was washed out, said City Engineer Bill Falconi.

In 1892, a suspension bridge on Pine Street was created to replace the washed-out bridge, Falconi said.

The first Pine Street bridge lasted until 1903, when a new one was erected that was similar in design to the current Pine Street bridge but made from less sturdy materials, Falconi said.
