New Grass Valley DMV office on schedule for August opening

The construction of the new Grass Valley DMV office remains on schedule and is slated for an August 2017 opening, officials said.

The building site, next door to Walgreen’s on Sutton Way, has been closed since mid-2015. A temporary office at 435 Sutton Way currently serves the area.

Once complete, the new facility will boast 8,201 square feet. The former office was 1,998 square feet, said Jessica Gonzalez, spokeswoman for the state Department of Motor Vehicles, in an email.

The $8.3 million project will bring a Zero Net Energy building to Grass Valley. It will create as much energy as it uses, Gonzalez added.

Solar panels will generate the building’s energy. Energy efficient lights and a new HVAC system will help lower power bills, Gonzalez added.

The Grass Valley DMV office will be the department’s second ZNE building. The first is in Fresno.

The temporary office is expected to close for a few weeks this summer as employees move into their new facility.

According to Gonzalez, the California Highway Patrol owned the old building, a portion of which was leased by DMV. CHP then relocated their offices and transferred the land to the DMV.

The old building was modular and unsuitable for renovations, which led to the construction of the new facility, she added.

Appointments at the local DMV office are encouraged. They significantly reduce wait times and can be made at 1-800-777-0133 or through the department’s website — http://www.dmv.ca.gov.

Nevada County residents also can visit other DMV offices, which include locations in Auburn, 11722 Enterprise Drive; Rocklin, 5245 South Grove; and Yuba City, 1570 Poole Blvd.
