Nevada Union students support blood drive
March 1, 2014
For years, Nevada Union High School students and staff have been donating blood at record levels.
Thursday they were at it again.
A second blood drive of the 2013-14 school year was held by the Grass Valley high school, and student donors didn’t let the rain slow them down at all. One hundred and sixty-two students showed up to try to donate Thursday. And while the final count is not yet in, approximately 159 pints were donated.
“I think it’s great that Nevada Union takes the time to do this,” said NU student Charles Comerate. “Because it is not all the time that a person has the time to donate. I plan to do it again next time!”
Many students expressed the same sentiment in that they are ready to jump at the chance to help others, but they are looking for ways to do it.
“I love how students are anxious to give back to those who are in need of blood,” said ASB President Chelsey Lopez.
“Unfortunately, I am too small to donate, but that hasn’t stopped me from volunteering every year at our school blood drive. I have met some incredible people working here, and I am glad I have this opportunity to make a difference.”
The event is sponsored by Nevada Union’s Executive Council, which works in conjunction with Blood Source to bring the event to the school. While the blood drive has been happening here for well over a decade, this year was particularly significant as blood banks across the nation have been running at critically low levels due to the increase of flu activity and the cancellation of blood drives because of severe weather.
According to the CDC, almost half of the United States has been experiencing widespread flu activity. The flu virus has precluded thousands of potential donors from contributing.
