More than 150 of Nevada County's top mathematics students from 17 local public, private and charter schools recently competed in the county-wide Mathematics Tournament coordinated by the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools' office. The two-day event was sponsored by Telestream and Miners Foundry Cultural Center with Miner Moe's Pizza providing gift certificates for all participants. Joe Crain from ClientWorks, a previous participant in the Math Tournament, served as emcee.

Competition consisted of problem solving, geometry and computation for grades five through eight with special topics added for seventh- and eighth-graders.

After spending the morning testing their abilities, the following overall high score sweepstakes winners were grade five, Eva Zlimen, Seven Hills; grade six, Kelly Muir, Grass Valley Charter, and Sarah Shine, Union Hill; grade seven, Ryan Brott, Seven Hills; and grade eight, Justin Gallupe, Magnolia.

Other first-place winners were:

In problem-solving — grade fifth, Zoey Moody, Alta Sierra, and Kate Moore, Seven Hills; grade six, Kelly Muir, Grass Valley Charter; grade seven, Ryan Brott, Seven Hills, and Brighten Drake, Grass Valley Charter; and grade eight, George Daly, Lyman Gilmore. In geometry — grade fifth, Eva Zlimen, Seven Hills; grade six, Kelly Muir, Grass Valley Charter; grade seven, Ryan Brott, Seven Hills; and grade eight, Connor Bente, Lyman Gilmore, and Justin Gallupe, Magnolia. In computation — grade fifth, Eva Zlimen, Seven Hills; grade six, Sarah Shine, Union Hill; grade seven, Ryan Brott, Seven Hills; and grade eight, Jack Devlin, Seven Hills, and Justin Gallupe, Magnolia. In special topics — grade seven, Ryan Brott, Seven Hills; and grade eight, Harrison Costantino, Magnolia.
