Nevada City named 6th coolest small town in US
February 27, 2014
Nevada City has made the top 10 list in Budget Travel's 9th annual America's Coolest Small Town contest. According to http://www.budgettravel.com, Nevada City will be the subject of an upcoming feature on its website, as well as in the Budget Travel tablet edition.
"We were sixth. We wanted to be number one," said Cathy Whittlesey, executive manager with the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce.
Whittlesey says the chamber played an active role in promoting Nevada City's participation in the contest — spreading the word online using email and social media.
The chamber even reached out to broadcast media in Sacramento.
"We did whatever we could do to get a vote," Whittlesey said. "And you could vote once every 24 hours."
Whittlesey believes this news could stimulate the local economy.

"We hope that it will bring people to town," she said. "We were the only one in California and one of the very few in the Western United States. We're very proud of that."
Budget Travel's favorable coverage of the community might also add to the housing demand in the local real estate market, potentially increasing the tax base.
"People will want to move to a cool town," Whittlesey said. "And a lot of people retire here, so it would be a good place to look at for retirement."
The contest ended Tuesday. Nevada City beat out Rockport, Texas, Estes Park, Colo., Galena, Ill., and Elkin, N.C., to earn its ranking at number six.
Nevada City is the only location west of Colorado to place in Budget Travel's top 10.
