Music camp celebrates 20 years

Sierra Mountain Music Camp will have its 20th anniversary celebration week from June 15-21 in Nevada City at Diamond Arrow.

SMMC has been teaching music up in the mountains and creating a full camp experience for more than 4,000 kids ages 9-20 since 1994.

Created by Gus and Peggy Noland to bring choral music to boys, the camp has grown over the years and now offers both boys and girls choral groups, as well as a full stringed symphony.

The 20th year celebration concert will be 5 p.m. June 22 at Hiram Johnson. More details are on out website at

Fire Camp set for July

The Nevada County Kids Fire Camp will return July 7-11. It is a local day camp that lasts for five days.

The mission of the camp is to allow middle school aged students to discover the day to day duties of a Firefighter. It is the camp's goal to create a safe environment, while allowing the campers to be involved in situations where they will rely on other members of there company to reach common goals.

Fire Camp will take place at the Fire Training Center located at Grass Valley Fire Station 2 and Pioneer Park in Nevada City.

All campers will be participating in Problem Solving, Firefighting, CPR, Boat Rescue, Rope Rescue and Knot Tying, Care and Maintenance of Gear and Equipment.

Parents and or guardians should note that if your child is selected, your presence will be required at a mandatory meeting. If the parents or guardians do not attend the meeting the spot will be given to the next child on the waiting list.
