A North Highlands man was jailed Wednesday after Nevada City police officers responded to a report of him looking into vehicles, only to find him reportedly driving a stolen one.

Nevada City Police officers responded to a call on the 300 block of Railroad Avenue regarding two suspicious male subjects looking into vehicles parked on the street at approximately 1:40 p.m. Wednesday, according to Officer Scott Goin.

The caller described the two individuals as being associated with a dark gray SUV that was parked on Railroad Avenue.

When officers arrived on scene, they made contact with Michael J. Pelton, 38, and Keith A. Gulden, 33, from North Highlands and Sacramento, respectively, Goin noted.

During the course of the officers' investigation, it was determined the SUV was reported stolen out of El Dorado County, according to Goin. Officers allegedly located a California driver's license for Pelton inside the stolen vehicle and he reportedly admitted to officers he had been driving the car.

Pelton was subsequently arrested and booked into the county jail for felony vehicle theft and felony possession of stolen property. As of press time Wednesday, Pelton was still at the Nevada County jail in lieu of $10,000 bail, according to the jail's booking department.
