What is your mission statement?
Women of Worth is a 501(c)(3) community benefit nonprofit organization. Women of Worth assists victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking and families in crisis to increase self-reliance and improve quality of life by helping them rebuild their lives with dignity, hope and safety.
Women of Worth provides no-cost services, including short-term assistance for families in crisis, short-term shelter and long-term transitional housing and programs to enable women and children to escape domestic violence safely.
How many paid employees
do you have?
With a small team of four employees, an executive director, shelter director, ReShop manager and warehouse coordinator, Women of Worth is heavily driven and supported by generous and devoted volunteers.
What is your nonprofit’s history?
Founded by Sandy Escobar-Schmidt, Women of Worth has been serving the community for 12 years.
As a domestic violence survivor, Escobar-Schmidt has a deeply personal understanding of and compassion for those who have and still are suffering. In 2001, with little more than hope and a vision, she embarked on a journey in an uphill battle against domestic violence.
In an effort to give access to the practical necessities needed in everyday life, she dedicated her life to the survivors of domestic violence, her children and the community.
Escobar-Schmidt faced many struggles but after nearly 10 years of long days and sleepless nights, her dream was realized in 2010 with the opening of Hetty’s Haven, the only long-term transitional shelter in Nevada County. After much success, a second home, Kelly’s Kottage, opened in 2012. Both homes are named in honor of women who lost their lives in tragic cases of domestic violence.
November 2012 marked the opening of the WoW ReShop and ReSource Center. The shop plays a vital role to the community by offering clothing, furniture and household items and by sustaining the needs of the clients of Women of Worth.
After 12 years, the vision of Women of Worth is clearer and broader than ever. In the ongoing effort to come to the aid of people, mend hearts and save lives, the love of people shows in everything we do.
Who is your primary audience?
Women of Worth is focused on serving victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking. Women of Worth also provides assistance to partnering agencies.
In 2012, Women of Worth provided more than 4,300 bed nights at Hetty’s Haven and Kelly’s Kottage and served 742 clients through all Women of Worth programs.
List the biggest achievements in your nonprofit’s history (up to three).
Hetty’s Haven opened in 2010, providing both shelter and wrap-around services to 15 women and children on any given day.
Kelly’s Kottage opened in 2012, providing both a short-term and long-term transitional living program.
WoW ReShop and Resource Center opened in 2012, offering new, gently used and re-purposed items to the public. Proceeds greatly help keep our shelter open.
Our clients residing at Hetty’s Haven also volunteer their time at the shop as part of their fresh start program.
List the biggest three challenges you face.
With so many valid causes, it can be a challenge to keep domestic violence awareness at the forefront, but considering the staggering number of lives that are affected by it, it is imperative that we do.
Obtaining enough funding to assist those requesting our services.
Maintaining a qualified staff and volunteers who are essential for us to sustain our agency and fulfill our mission.
What is your No. 1 short-term goal for the next year?
To increase awareness, continue serving our current clients and assist clients referred to us.
What is your No. 1 long-term goal for the next three years?
To have funding sources that keep our agency sustainable in a manner that allows us to serve whoever is in need of and could benefit from our services.
What are your major fundraisers and dates?
1.) Car Drawing- 1983 380SL Classic Red Convertible Mercedes. Tickets are $20 each or three for $50. Drawing will be in early July or sooner if all tickets sell.
2.) A Taste of Country – Sept. 14 at The NCCA Building. Enjoy a tri-tip and chicken barbecue, live music, dancing, auctions and raffles.
What is the best way a person interested in your organization could help?
Assist with fundraising needs, give monetary donations of any amount, donate items from our wish list (used cell phones, useable and/or sale-able items). Shop and/or volunteer in our WoW ReShop.
